Live Race Video and Audio
The race Management Team plans to broadcast live video of the race start
at Beauty Point and audio of some of the marine radio skeds beyween yachts while they are at sea. The systems
used all work well from the office setup and while it is hoped that there will be no technical difficulties
whilst on the move with the the race fleet, it cannot be guaranteed. The start of the race video broadcast
will commence from 1.55 pm, five minutes prior to the start then following the yachts as they head down
the Tamar River towards Bass Strait. The filming will be from the Australian Maritime College's launch Pinduro
that will be taking the official party including the Race Patron, His Excellency Mr Peter Underwood AC,
Governor of Tasmania.
Check
on the website for other broadcast times.
An Evening with the Weatherman
The well known Tasmanian weatherman Malcolm Riley will be giving an informative talk on marine weather
and its many facits at the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club, in conjunction with Tamar Sea Rescue, on Wednesday
31st March at 7.30 pm. RSVP to btyptmarbrok@microtech.com.au by
Tuesday 30th March 2010.
Malcolm is a regular presenter of weather information sessions for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology
and anyone even vagually interested in the weather will enjoy Malcolm's interesting and informative weather
presentation.
Three Peaks Runners Run Six Feet
As
part of their preparation for this year's Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race, Wildfire's runners Carl Barker
and Gerry Grimes participated in the Six Foot Track Marathon in the Blue Mountains earlier this month.
The
Six Foot Track is a 45km trail that follows the route of the original 1884 horse track from Katoomba
to Jenolan Caves and winds through state forests and national parks. The marathon has been conducted since
1984 and is the largest 100% off-road running event in Australia. It reached its limit of 850 runners
well before entries closed this year and is a fund raising event for the NSW Rural Fire Service and
Six Foot Track Heritage Trust.
This will be the fifth Six Foot Track Marathon for both Carl and Gerry
but it will be the first time that they have done it as friends. They were introduced to each other through
their involvement in the Three Peaks Race in which they've teamed up with the sailors on Wildfire in
an attempt to outdo her quite creditable performance in 2008. Carl was part of the crew in 2008 but
this will be Gerry's first time in a Three Peaks Race.
Both runners are looking forward to the Three Peaks
Race and see the 45km of the Six Foot Track Marathon as being ideal preparation for the challenges that
they will face in the 65km run up Mt Strzelecki, the 33km of Mt Freycinet and the 35km of Mt Wellington. M

Team CommunityCarbon
CommunityCarbon is an Australian company that is helping to build renewable energy infrastructure in our
communities, where we can see and believe in the contribution we are all making to build a sustainable future. CommunityCarbon sells
a stake in each community project to corporations and individuals alike, as a discrete purchase, or embedded in the purchases
made in our daily lives. Each purchase made provides you with a piece of the project you can call your own, and
some white balloons to offset those emissions you cant avoid - and the funds raised are used to pay for the infrastructure
provided for the community benefit.
The team draws upon a disparate group of friends with a combined sense of adventure, working to make the
most of the event whilst helping build renewable energy for community projects across Australia. For
this event, the funds raised help the Melbourne Zoo (Healesville) take their platypus enclosure off the
grid, whilst also ensuring a reduced carbon footprint for the team and their participation.
Race Teams
A smaller yet competitive field of teams will set out on Good Friday for the 22nd Three Peaks Race.
- Team Whistler, David Rees, Hobart Tas
This is the third time this team has competed and to make life more interesting the same teams members
will compete in the British Three Peaks Race in June this year. They will be the fourth Tasmanian Team
to compete in the UK but will be the first to have exactly the same team members to compete in both
races.
- Westbury Mersey Pharmacy, Terry Travers, Devonport Tas
A stalwart and multiple winner of the Three Peaks Race, Terry has purchased what is the smallest yacht
in the fleet this year in the expectation to show that a budget entry can still perform very well.
- CommunityCarbon, Jeff Dusting, Sandringham Vic
A new team to the race competing in largest monohull yacht in the fleet. Jeff and his team will be on
a steep learning curve for the event but will enjoy the challenges this event will provide.
- Haphazard, Nick Edmunds, Sidmouth Tas
Having competed in every race to date including the British Three Peaks Race you cannot find a more experienced
team. With two past wins to their credit the Haphazard team will put in a good performance and will
relish stronger wind conditions.
- Deguello, John Brierley, Hobart Tas
This is John's second race with this beautiful catamaran that recently had a major refit. The power
of this yacht in fresh conditions will give the team a fast and comfortable ride.
- Peccadillo, Charles Meredith, St Kilda Vic
Another large catamaran that will challenge
the rest of the multihull division. Coming from Victoria Charles will be keen to make the trip worthwhile with a good placing.
- VisitFlindersIsland.com.au, Steve Laird, Hobart Tas
The recently launched catamaran in 2009 already has some mileage behind it having competed in the Launceston
to Hobart Race. Promoting Flinders Island as a great destination the team will have the Deputy Mayor
in the sailor crew.
- Team Wildfire, Malcolm Robinson, Hobart Tas
Everyone is looking forward to achieving some "personal bests" and as Malcolm Robinson states, "to be involved
with a race with such a great tradition, one that is sure to excite and exhaust us".
- Don't Panic Racing, Jamie Cooper, Lilydale Tas
The name might indicate an exciting time but don't be misled by that. This team is very experienced and
will be taking the challenge seriously. In this and with past teams these team members have always put
in a consistent performance.
- Carey Hire , Tristan Gourlay, Launceston Tas
Tristan has crewed with other teams in more recent years so we welcome him back with his own yacht.

TILMAN, THE WARRIOR WANDERER
"Bill Tilman was an extraordinary man. A highly decorated warrior of two world wars, he travelled tens
of thousands of miles - often on foot - in some of the most remote regions of Asia, Africa and South America,
and trod the summit slopes of over a hundred peaks. He and the celebrated mountaineer, Eric Shipton, pioneered
large tracts of the Himalaya including key routes on Mt. Everest, scantily dressed in old wool sweaters, woollen
britches, and hob-nailed boots. They did not approve of grandiose expeditions believing that an assault on a
Himalayan giant could be organised on the back of an envelope. And they proved time and again that such frugal
exploits could indeed be successful. "
After much research a new book on the life of Bill Tilman has been written by David A. Glen entitled "The
Life and Times of the Legendary Explorer Bill Tilman" . Just to read David's website about Tilman
is interesting in itself and is a worthy recognition to this incredible man and the book should be a proud addition
to your bookshelf. www.tilman.tv
