Welcome
With
little more than two months until the start of the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks
Race there is growing activity from competitors and the organising committee preparing
for the 21st annual race.
A number of first time competitors look likely to line up at Beauty Point on Good Friday,
10th April 2009. While it is always great to renew friendships with competitors from
past races it is also very nice to greet and make welcome new competitors to this unique
event.
Competitor News
Last issue of Speaks had a story about John Brierley's magnificent refitted
catamaran Deguello. Unfortunately we have to report that John has a further
task in hand to have Deguello sailing again after the catamaran lost its
mast in early January while cruising the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. John hopes to have
the cat ready for sea with a new mast by late March.
A long voyage to the start line again will be made by Bruce and Suzanne Arms who will
sail their Big Wave Rider from Queensland for the Easter race. Bruce and Suzanne have spent
some time in Tasmania in recent months assisting a number of catamaran builders with
numerous tasks on their new vessels.
Big Wave Rider is a 46 foot Chamberlin designed catamaran distinctive in its
pink paintwork. It has the capacity of challenging the other Chamberlin designed catamaran,
the well sailed and line honours winner of past races in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Shearwater
Pure Sprouts skippered by Phillip Marshall from Devonport.
Runners on the Crew Register
As happens every year there are numerous runners and some sailors keen to join teams.
So far seventeen have registered looking for placement. While most applicants are from
Tasmania there are many from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand.
You might be able to assist these people by referring a team needing crew to the crew
register by or convincing a yacht owner to enter as competent runners are available
to join their team.
Race Entry Forms
Race entry forms are available for download on the race
website. Entries should be lodged by the end of February.

New EPIRBs compulsory from 1 February 2009
While I am sure that you have seen the publicity about the requirement to upgrade your Emergency
Position Indicating Radio Beacons this is a reminder to look soon at buying a new version as
stocks might be limited.
The old analogue tone transmitting EPIRB, commonly known as 121/243 EPIRBs, became obsolete
from 1 February 2009. The new digital EPIRBs that transmit on 406 MHz as well as on the aircraft
frequency 121.5 MHz use a new satellite system that does not allow the old EPIRBs to work.
The new 406 EPIRBs must now to be used for marine and personal use and are also required by
bushwalkers. It is suggested that replacement EPIRBs are obtained sooner rather than later as
the demand may well outstrip supply leaving some not properly equipped in time for the Easter
race.
Obsolete EPIRBs can be returned to your retailer for proper disposal.

The race rules have been amended for yachts arriving at Flinders Island. All yachts, regardless
of the race division in which they are entered, are now required to pass to the south of Little
Dog Island whether arriving or departing Lady Barron.
The other change is for the Fully Crewed Division. The route into Lady Barron will follow the
recognised shipping channels through Franklin Sound passing to the north of Tin Kettle Island
and south of Little Dog Island as shown on the Australian Hydrographic chart AUS 179 Approaches
to Lady Barron following the leads.
